Overview
The Turbo Training Program from Holden Youth Soccer (HYS) gives players a chance to get additional training (on top of their HYS team practices and games) with licensed, paid coaches right in Holden…at an extremely low cost compared to other alternatives. While it is open to all players registered with HYS in the qualifying age groups, the program is intended for those who genuinely want to practice more. All players receive a training shirt.
About Turbo Training
Turbo training provides additional 45-minute training sessions on weeknights. Sessions are offered on two nights, and players can sign up for one or two. Players can choose which night(s) to attend. The program spans six weeks. Sessions focus on dribbling/footwork, juggling, passing/receiving, and shooting/finishing. The activities are very high touch, because repetition is the main key to development. The program is run by former Assumption College standout Ryan Murphy. It is open to players in Grades 1-12. We group players by age.
How It Works
The key to soccer skill development is volume and frequency of repetitions. The more times a player touches the ball, and the more often they play/practice, the better their muscle memory and control becomes. As with playing a musical instrument or reading, there is no substitute for repetition. Turbo Training allows players to dramatically increase number AND frequency of repetitions.
We use fun activities and keep sessions short and low-pressure. This is especially imperative for kids who are doing extra practice. The most important thing is that kids enjoy soccer and continue to play. We do not want to make soccer feel like a chore or a source of pressure. This will lead to less enjoyment and less interest. If they are out there playing, they will improve. They don’t need pressure.
Who it’s for
Any player in Grade 1 and up can join Turbo Training. There are no cuts. Keep in mind, however, that it is specifically designed for committed, self-motivated, focused players who want to do more than their HYS team. We don’t want to push players who aren’t ready for more soccer. If they stick with it at their own pace, their enjoyment may grow organically to where they want additional training in the future. Or they may just continue to enjoy soccer as a leisure activity, which is fine as well!
